Africa Progress Panel Expert Consultation
27 Jan 2012On January 31, 2012, the Panel member convened an expert consultation to try to better define economic turmoil, global power shifts and their impact on Africa's progress.
“Framing key Issues”
The consultation's objectives were to outline the emerging significant global trends affecting Africa’s progress and highlight key messages including challenges and opportunities.
Over the last few years, the world has changed dramatically and geopolitical relationships have shifted fundamentally due to a multitude of interrelated and complex factors. Some of these changes have been gradual, for example, the rise of China and the BRIC countries, deepening economic crisis, and a whole gamut of significant new technologies. Others, such as the ‘Arab Spring’, the emergence of new forms of social protest loosely interconnected across the globe, and the drama of the Eurozone, emerged quickly and unexpectedly, over the last year. As a new order emerges, assumptions about how the world works and how it should be governed are now being questioned.
Given the range of possible issues at hand, the consultation provided a platform for participants to identify critical themes and trends, to be considered for inclusion in the Africa Progress Report. Furthermore, the aim will be to unpack the dynamic elements among the themes identified, short and long-term priorities as well as any conflict between these, and potential development scenarios for Africa.
